View Full Version : Judges dilemma

Tis the final of the Australian Compound Match Play Championships for 2005 at DVA in Melbourne. Bryce has beaten Clint in one semi-final (never easy to do, but Bryce is a great shot and is shooting excellently). 2Dogs has beaten Zoran in the other semi-final (also not easy to do as I discovered in 2004). So it will be PSE vs Bowtech (I think).
Bryce, as the higher scorer, goes second.
Bryce and 2Dogs both shoot and Bryce gets one point ahead after 3 shots. And so it continues down to the last shot with both shooting excellently (they need to, you see, because there is a box of tiisues for the loser).
2Dogs gets a 10 with his last shot, so Bryce now needs a 10 to win with his last arrow.
However, as he is about to shoot yet another 10, Bryce discovers that the cable slide on his ever-reliable and accurate PSE Scorpion has irreparably broken and the bow us unshootable. Surely 2Dogs has now won as there is no spare left-handed bow nearby (Old Dog lost in a previous round to Marcus and has packed his bow away, and Jim Larven lost to Adam so his is packed away as well).
However, as newly crowned "arrow throwing champion of Australia" from the fun event the previous day, Bryce carefully hands his much-loved PSE to his coach Jim Park, and in the remaining 5 seconds of his time allowance, picks up his 27" X10 and throws it into the air towards the target. Expert that he his, even he was not expecting much, but lo and behold the archery gods are smiling on him (or perhaps poking fun at 2Dogs) and Bryce's X10 lands in the X, for a win by 1 point, with much cheering and clapping from the Victorian continent led by Zoe.
Or is it?
2Dogs of course wants to hand the box of tissues (he received from Bryce after the recurve target event) back to Bryce and promptly asks the judges for a ruling.
So: who has won?

FITA rule 7.4.1 in the Target archery section which covers matchplay, states:

Each athlete wil shoot his or her arrows...

Give the medal to 2Dogs and the tissues to Bryce! :D

Does FITA actually define "shoot"? Probably not, would be my guess.

I thought part of the training of a judge was to assess things within the intent of the rule - not start trying to find loopholes. :-?

I think it is reasonable to say that the intent of 'shoot' is to use the bow to propell the arrow in the normal way. That is archery itself.

Throwing arrows is a different sport.

Hey, 2Dogs won!

... with much cheering and clapping from the Victorian continent led by Zoe.

Continental drift must have occurred very quickly... :-?

Or was the intention saying that those who are incontinent didn't dare join in with the cheering, clapping and jumping up and down just in case.... :o

In the time allowed for an equipment failure, wouldn't Bryce's much-loved coach replace the broken cable slide with the one from his own PSE?

Victorian continent? Perhaps the 45.72 metre wall went around Victoria instead of QLD?

No it was a left hand cable slide. :D

It is defined for recurve at least:

FITA Book2, Chapter 7..

7.3.1.1
.... , and in operation is held in one hand by its handle (grip) while the fingers of the other hand draw, hold back and release the string.

It is less explicit for Compound :)

I was about to post that they are still trying to translate it into words of one syllable, so we're on the same track unclepete! :D

'It is less clear for Compound' saves syllables.

Is that right Robbo, trust PSE to have LH and RH cable slides. :-?

But then I don't get to use borderline words like 'explicit' in a public forum. :)

I did mean 'less explicit' not 'less clear', or in other words more implicit -- in that the definition of shooting the compound bow relies more on the implied meaning by extension from the recurve definition, rather than writing it out in explicitly in its own right.

Something can be explicit and yet still be clear or unclear, much like the previous sentence. :bday:

And this is from a longbow archer? And another who thought it too wet to even turn up at the club today.

Credibility problems here. :agrue:

Well - yeah. But only after I got a phonecall (before midday) from the club secretary saying you were all wussing out and going home...

Besides, I was having much more fun (?) with vandalised cars, dead batteries, and a brand-new misbehaving PC. Ask me about it sometime, but buy me a beer first...

Phone call:

Secretary to unclepete; "Are you coming to the club?"

unclepete: "I was not planning to."

Secretary: "We (names) are about to go home."

Hhhhhmmmmmm. Slightly different from what you posted.
