A few facts:
- Doug started shooting in 1966 at Oakleigh City Archers.
- He is a life member of Waverley City Archers.
- He is now 87.
- He shot recurve (one he made) for many years and then one day turned up with a compound.
- He ran "Burwood Bows" for many years, and the one in the top picture is one of his. Many archers learnt to shoot using Doug's bows.
- He has devoted many years to helping run the club.
- He was the oldest competitor in the archery at the Masters games.
- He has been a tremendous addition to the well-being of the club.
A few of the less well known facts:
- He still has the original toothbrush he used to paint his bows.
- He has been known to shoot a few excellent 10's (at least they would have been if he had first loaded an arrow).
- He was at the Bow Hut once showing off a new longbow he had just made, and Ron Tyrrell crept up behind him as he was drawing it and broke a wooden arrow in half. We think that Doug jumped about 2M in the air.
In Doug's honour we all shot the short half of a FITA. For the recurvers: Hans Wright top scored, just beating Kate Hamond and David Anear. I shot my lowest half FITA for just about 40 years.

I have owned a couple of burwood bows over the years , One was a longbow , that was unfortunately stolen from the club when we were broken into years ago , and the second was a beautiful 58 inch 50# recurve I bought at a garage sale about 15 years ago . It had a twisted limb , so one day while I was going to trade school in melbourne I took it with tme and then took a train out to Dougs home and he straightened the limb for me .
Unforturnately I sold it to a guy only last year , and he left it strung on a hot day and she delaminated . Doug had a comprehensive card system on all the bows he made and went back through his records and found all the details of when my old bow was made .
A great man and congratulations on raching this fantastic milestone
Yeah it was a great turnout and a huge thanks to those that showed up to thank Dougie for all his hard work and dedication to our great sport.
