Hows this for strange.

Well, from the pictures, it looks like they are using Danage targets. Make sure you all have your arrow pullers for those damned things! We shot on them at the National Indoors. 2315 allies were difficult enough to get out only going in an inch or two. X10's were damn near impossible! I ended up with a few bits of torn skin by the end of the weekend, thankfully not in shot-affecting areas... :o

You will be pleased to know that Australian Team Management (Alison and Jim) currently hold both the height (100M) and distance (150M) records for the rocket launching competition.
We were actually supposed to hit the Planet Zog at about 60M distance, but we significantly over-shot, nearly landing on some buildings far in the distance.
As you would expect, we carefully optimised the required quantity of rocket fuel, but obtained a higher exhaust pressure than calculated, hence over shooting the target (and a very high tree, and most of the archery range).
Dave was planning on challenging for the skinny dipping medal tonight.

- Picking up one of Dave's X10's out of the grass at 70M.
- Chris shooting two X10's at 70M but with his sight on 30M.

Just got a call from Jim
They are heading out now to start shooting day one.
Our U18 compounders are shooting very well and they have their matchpay order sorted out.
USA's Branden G. is shooting very nice including 350+ at 70m.
However all through the pratise days Dave and Tim constantly had a crowd standing around watching them shoot! :D
Marcus
20-07-2004, 04:13 PM
More info
They have the largest TV screen in Britan behind the shooting line on theback of a semi-trailer which is broadcasting images etc from the shoot.
64 target butts with 4 archers per target, and that's just the juniors (not the cadets)
Paul is shooting with Brandan.
Wind is from the rear with a moderate breeze strong enough to keep the FITA flad straight out.

A few more bits of info (I will not worry about the scores as I am sure you can get them elsewhere):
- Dave had a miss at 90M (but still a wonderful score).
- It got quite windy (just my sort of weather and I wish I had been shooting). Mostly a following wind, tending to rear quartering. It would have suited me nicely.
- They are using a beaut electronic display board to show the scores (they show the full field of scores every end - best I have seen).
- It is taking about 15 minutes per end.
- Had a bit of a chat to Braden - nice guy and a great shooter. During one of the windier periods be shot a beaut 58 at 70M.
- The Korean ladies have superb technique (we knew that, but I still checked). I took some pictures of their stance (it is exactly the one I teach).
- Many of the compounders have poor technique.
- After the last end today the scores got things a little wrong and the score board showed Scott in 2nd place - I was not quick enough with my camera.
- There is a very wide diversity of equipment types (recurves especially, with W&W and PSE risers being very prominent). Probably more Hoyt compounds than others, but still a diversity. X10's and Cartels seem to be the most common arrows.
- There are a number of dealers present, but they are all small ones I have never heard of.
- Each archer has 0.8M of space on the shooting line.
- A few of our archers suffered from nerves today at the first distance (but got better at the second).
- The cadets shot this afternoon, and the wind was stronger.
- I have so far had a few minor equipment issues to deal with as well as a few form items.
- There are three shooting grounds: the competition ground, the practice ground adjacent to the competition ground and the practice ground at the residences. There were over 60 butts in use, four per butt, for the juniors, and about 40 for the cadets. Over 400 competitors.
- Each archer will have an individual target face for 30M tomorrow.
- The entrance drive for the UK Sports Centre is about 2 miles long.
I should explain the talk about rocketry in earlier posts: to keep the competitors amused after shooting, the organisers have arranged a number of activities. One of those is making water and compressed air rockets out of Coke bottles. Huge fun. As I mentioned, Australian Team Management had the record distance last night (but the New Zealanders tell us they unofficially got just a touch further, so we will be trying again soon). We attach fins to the back of the Coke bottle, put in some water and a valve at the back, attach a bike pump, put the rocket on a launch ramp and pump like crazy. When sufficient pressure has been reached it blows the valve out the back and off it goes.

And here was me thinking you had come over here to be the responsible one! :P
Nice to know some of the info. We might need a little more depth when time permits... the scoreboard sounds great! Are they using electronic scoring?
Any chance you can swing by York for a few hours coaching before you leave the country? ;)

Regarding the scoring: as I understand it, there are volunteers every couple of targets who get the scores back to the computer area, from where they are placed on the score board. It runs about one end behind the shooting, cycling through all of the competitors, seven at a time. Very impressive indeed, and far better than anything I have seen before.
Another impressive thing is the number of volunteers from the GNAS. They are doing a great task. The organisers have had a number of significant challenges, mainly through teams registering very late and some turning up with more competitors than they had registered. I think GNAS was expecting about 250, but we have over 400.
As one of the Australian Team Coaches (with Lee Ki Sik being the other), I am allowed on the competition field up to the waiting line. I cannot go to the targets. Ki Sik and I have divided up the archers into recurve and compound, with me mainly looking after the compounders. This morning I had Kathryn on target 28, and the three guys on 57, 58 and 59, so I had quite a bit of walking up and down the line. During the 90M range I had to do some work on Paul's GFK launcher (there is some slop in the bearings and it was moving around quite a lot - we were able to remove some of it, but will need to watch it closely).
No, Grant, cannot get to York ! (I will, however, spend a few days in London after this - I could not get on the same flight as the rest of the team due to administrative challenges).

I went to have a look today (day2). Some impressive scores from Aus. Well done guys. I did however see Dave's miss at 90m. I noticed Jim running around a fair bit. Was going to say hi but didn't want to interupt. I should be going friday & or saturday so I will probably introduce myself then. I'm sure i'll be seeing aus in the finals.
Good to see Japan and Turkey on the practice targets after their matches when everybody else went.

From your official forum rep at the event:
I could not get on the forum last night, so two days worth.
- Tim shot very well indeed on the second day. Pb for both 50M and 30M.
- Braden Gellenthien shot beautifully at 50M, for a 352. As he was shooting next to Paul I was able to watch most of it. At 30M he shot an 8 to get 357 (and an excellent 8 it was). He is a nice guy to talk to.
- The US compounders shot a team world record.
- Our compounders struggled just a bit. I thought they shot well, but their scores were a bit lower than they wanted.
- Virtually everyone was wanting to watch Tim and Dave.
- In the matchplay today, Stephen Clifton (NZ) started with 11 10's in his last 12 arrow round. He had sufficient X's for the Open men's World record, but shot a 9 with his last arrow.
- In one of the 18 arrow rounds, Braden shot 57+60+59 for 176, just short of the Open World Record.
- Our three Junior Men Compounders all shot well in their matchplay round but came up against strong competition. In Scott's match the Frenchman he was up against started his final end with X, X, X, X, (all touching) and then had 10, 9. Bit of a challenge to beat that.
- Paul started with a 5, but then shot his match beautifully.
- Scott started with an X and a 10 (but then a 7).
- Kathryn was up against the 4th ranked archer and shot very nicely to win.
- Thomas was up against the top-ranked Korean and led after the first end, was equal after two ends, but shot a 5. I think that everyone except the Koreans were wanting Thomas to win.
- Dave's early rounds were particularly impressive. His first end was a 59. In the 1/4 round he opened with a 58 to lead by 1, but in the second end he shot two 8's.
- Suzie started with a nice 51 and was doing very well, except for just one shot in the final end.
- I have been particularly impressed with the organisation. It has been excellent. The chairman of the organising committee told me that they are using a scoring system developed by the French. In the matchplay they have every archer's name shown at his shooting position. Scores have been shown live virtually straight after each end. The number of, efficiency, and enthusiasm of the volunteers has been stunning.
- There are about five archery shops on site (but none that I had heard of before). The usual sorts of things are for sale.
- At the equipment inspection, Chris presented about 9 release devices for inspection.
- The kitchen is doing a remarkable job in feeding over 400 people for breakfast and dinner each day. Dave and Tim have worked out that with two queues they can visit each one once to get two serves each meal.
- Ki Sik has brought along a supply of Korean soups. I tried one today: quite delicious, but I am pleased he advised me to only use 1/2 of the hot spices rather than the full amount in the kit.
On to the significantly more important things of the event:
- Australian Team Management (Alison and me) are now the leaders in the distance, height and accuracy events of the rocketry competition. Our furthest shot was over 150M, the highest was (by my estimation) over 100M, and we got within 4M of hitting the target at about 70M away. As you would no doubt expect, we have worked out the optimum use of the technology so that we can get the highest pressure in the coke bottle and our trajectory is probably about 1/3 of the angle used by others. Interestingly, others have noticed that we are doing this rather better than anyone else and we have been subject to close scrutiny with others trying to work out how we do it (they have not, however, noticed the subtle difference in the way we are using the technology). Naturally enough, Dave is trying to persuad us to aim at the windows of the nearby residence.
Tomorrow we will all go along to cheer for Tim in the finals, and then in the afternoon we are planning on a touristing trip, going back to collect Tim's gold medal at the end of the afternoon. Then we will win the compound and recurve team events the day after. The guys and I have worked out that we will do best having them shoot in the order Paul,m Scott then Chris.
I actually got to shoot some arrows yesterday (borrowed one of Chris' bows, with a draw length 3" shorter than I normally need). Shot rather well actually.

Just checked it out - not bad.
Creating the web page isn't particularly difficult - the logistics behind collecting and entering the scores is usually the problem. From Jim's comments, they've got lots of volunteers and good organisation and that's what makes it possible.
Tonight will be interesting.

Congratulations and well done to all our Aussie Juniors in UK. - Also to NZ'ers (after all they are almost Aussies if it weren't for that little strip of water and most of them live here anyway!)
Jim sounds like he is having a great time. But is the rocket launching taking over from the archery???
Thought you'd like to know it is still cold (3.5 on Thursday morning) Please bring home some warmer weather!!!

Your reporter, reporting in:
An excellent day today.
As I am certain you have by now seen all the scores and know the results, I will just comment on the other things of interest.
- You would probably not be aware of the drama of Tim's semi-final. Tim was gone for all money with three arrows to go - down by five points. The Korean was obviously nervous and let down a number of times prior to shooting two 7's for his last two shots. A turn-around of 6 points in two shots. I was Tim's agent down at the target and the feeling was that he was a goner prior to that (sure looked like it, but the important thing was that he never gave up).
- In Tim's final he started with three 10's all touching (just above the X). His apponent shot well, but Tim was going to win it all the way.
- In the Junior Compound Ladies, the leader board (which was live) showed that the Swede had won by a point. celebrations all around. Then there was a correction to a liner and the scores were equal. The USA lass shot first and hit the 10, beating the Swede's 8. I felt quite sorry for the Swede - it would have been better if the doubtfull arrow had first been called with the lower score.
- Down at the target, the judges were calling every arrow, and the score was punched into a keypad connected back to the computers in the scoring area. From there the scores were relayed directly to the large digital displays in front of each competitor. It is a system developed by the French. I have some photographs.
- Braden Gellenthien looked a winner all the way in the Junior Compound Men. Started with a 59 and looked especially confident. Stephjen Clifton did not shoot as well today as yesterday, but won the bronze well.
- It was strongly apparent that the Koreans did not cope well with the pressure in the finals. They were letting down shots quite a lot.
- Tim was drug and alcohol tested following his match (he and I were still there several hours after the final).
- The compounders and I have been practicing team matchplay this evening. They were averaging in the mid 240's, which is quite strong (and it is windy).
- The medal ceremonies were impressive. Once again the GNAS has run the event excellently.
- Of all the National Anthems used, ours was the only one to have included a singer. We will, however, need to encourage the Australians to sing. They need to learn from the Italians, who do such things wonderfully.
- Thomas somehow suceeded in getting one of the Korean ladies to part with a Korean team shirt, so he wore that for most of today. And in case anyone asks, no, there was no Korean lady wandering about shirtless.
- Following Braden's win, Chris immediately went to the nearest shop to purchase an exact copy of Braden's bow.
- By a very long way, the Italians are the most supportive barrackers.
- At one stage the UK team was singing "ozzie, ozzie, ...... etc", and doing it rather better than the Australians.
- The announcer was announcing everything in both English and in French (as is required). He was doing rather well, and was complemented by the French on how well he was doing. I found that my French is still pretty good as well, and I could understand him quite easily.
- Jonathon Shales (World Field recurve champion, 1998) has been running a test of the Beiter "hit or miss" system for everyone to try. It has yellow plastic discs set in a black plastic holder. When the arrow hits them there is a nice "bang" and the disc goes dark. They range in size from 120mm, 80mm, 70mm, etc down to 40mm. He had the archers shooting at them from 30M. I had a go with Stephen Clifton's spare bow (and was one of the few able to get right through from the 120mm down to the 70mm disc - I had to aim quite a bit to the side and high, so it was a bit of a challenge). It looks like quite a good system to me.
- Alison and I still hold the rocketry records, and the final is at the BBQ tomorrow night.
- I am still extremely impressed by how well the event is being run. I am told that FITA estimated that 250 people would attend. In fact there are over 400 competitors and including officials it is over 520. The GNAS must have at least 100 volunteers at the event (possibly more), and they are very efficient, well organised, and friendly.

Got to love the FITA Press Release #6 on the JWACs.... Tim is more talented than we already knew - he not only shot and won both Recurve and Compound, but has a dual nationality not even Rupert Murdoch (at least I think it was him :-? ) could con out of the governments concerned!!
And just think what Braden will be shooting when he reaches Junior level! :o And for the cadets neither AUS or KOR had competitors in the recurve section so it was sort of hard to win!
LATER ADDITION TO POST: To their credit FITA corrected this press release within a few hours of the errors being pointed out to them. 8) :D
USA on top of the Compound World
Friday, July 23
Friday has determined archery's new Junior and Cadet World Champions, who are the future of our sport. We have had a great event so far, with good scores in spite of the tension perceptible at this stage of such a competition. These young archers have honoured the sunny and warm weather: each of them has given their very best in an extremely friendly and fair play atmosphere. Special thanks to the Italian team for livening things up in the grandstand!
Today, eight gold medals were being attributed, and they fell to six different countries. This worldwide distribution is a good surprise for our sport. It shows how popular and widespread archery is around the world, and that many different nations are now able to compete at a very high level.
Only in the Compound division is one country still on top of the world: three out of the four possible gold medals have indeed become US property, Tiffany Reeves in the Junior Women category, Braden Gellenthien in Cadet Men, and Tim Cuddihy in Junior Men. Only Antoinette Heijkers from the Netherlands (Cadet Women) was able to prevent the Compound competition from a total American domination.
As far as the Recurve division is concerned, it was thought that Korea and Australia would win most medals. It was only partly the case, as the four Recurve individual finales saw a good mixing of countries clash. Four different nations have become new World Champions: Italy with Carla Frangilli (RCW), China thanks to Chen Wenyuan (RCM), Australia and its Olympians Tim Cuddihy (RJM), and Korea with Ki Bo Bae (RJW).
Tomorrow (Saturday) is saved for the teams finales. We will then know which countries hit the top of the world...

Ok, here we are again. I could not get on the Internet after the team events, but am now staying with friends in London.
Best I could do was to ring Marcus during the team events with a few progress scores.
Our compounders shot well in the team event but were run over by the Brits.
Our recurvers shot very nicely in the first round and won pretty easily. In the second round they had Poland, and we recruited the New Zealand team as extra barrackers (even had them wearing Australian tops).
In the third round they were against India and it was a good match. The Indians shot wonderfully in the third end and won it.
For the final I was indeed requested by the guys to wear the "lucky bathrobe" while I was their agent. They shot magnificantly against the French and never looked like losing. Their last end in particular was extremely impressive. Dave shot 88 from 90 for the match.
For the compound cadet girls there was only a team from the USA. The organisers assembled four teams from the various competitors and we did indeed have a competition. Nicole was in "Team CAT", made up of Canada, Australia and Turkey, with me as the coach. We lost to "Team Benelux", but then beat "Team Central America" to take the bronze.
There were some exciting finals: Canada beat the USA in the compound junior boys (First win to Canada in a world championship in 37 years, I was told). The cadet recurve boys final was a good one with China vs Germany. At the end the scores seemed to be tied, and so everyone rushed over to see the one arrow shoot-off, but the judges corrected the value for one arrow to give a German win.
We then had the presentations and closing, which was a bit too long.
that night there was a BBQ (which went a bit late).
Sunday morning most of our team departed for Manchester airport at 6.30am. I travelled with the NZ team down to London.
Overall, it was an excellent event and our archers did very well.

This is what can happen when the airlines get a little too vigorous with the luggage handling. This archer had his case crushed and every arrow broken. He lost a full set of ACE's.

This is the score entry device used at the championships.
(I took this one while acting as Tim's agent in the recurve final). As each arrow was shot the judge called out its value (checked by me) and it was keyed in directly to the computer system on the side of the field and from there displayed on the large digital displays in front of the archers. Developed by the french and borrowed for this event. During the finals two were in operation. During the ranking rounds 32 were used (one per two targets).

This is the digital display used to show the leader board.
Every end (including 3 arrow ends) every archer's score was shown.
The display could be separated into four separate displays which were then used for the finals (one per archer). Very impressive indeed.

As usual, the Korean ladies had excellent form. This was on the practice ground, and these two simply filled up the 10 ring at 70M every end. Quite impressive to watch. Their shots were quite quick. However, in the matchplay finals it seemed to me that they did not deal with the pressure as well as required - they let down frequently (which was never the case in practice).
You can see from the trees that it was a little windy.

Of the compounders, Braden Gellenthien (USA) had the best form. As he was shooting on the same target as Paul, I was able to watch him shoot the full FITA, and I also watched him quite a lot on the practice ground. His form was text-book correct. Bow weight is 58 pounds. It was obvious to me that he would win.

I watched our recurvers quite closely, and they each had excellent form. Tim shot very well indeed through the whole event, as did Dave.
Suzie and Thomas did not score as high as the other two but nevertheless shot quite nicely.

The patron for the event was Lord Coe (perhaps better known as Sebastian Coe, Olympic Champion middle distance runner).
I was able to have a good chat to him and to get his autograph. His is the Chairman of the UK bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.

For the team events, we recruited the New Zealanders as "honorary Australians" to assist with the barracking. Here Stephen and Jack are helping Paul and Lexie with the flag at the time our guys were beating Poland.

Did you get a prize in the Rocket final ?

Did you get a prize in the Rocket final ?
Alison and I did indeed get the best results, but no prize.
The trick was ensuring that we got the highest pressure in the coke bottle. I noticed that if we assembled the valve apparatus backwards from the usual approach that we were likely to have it hold much more effectively. The rocket launched when the pressure in the bottle got sufficiently high to blow the pump hose off the bottle. With our arrangement we got the pressure so high that the whole fitting blew off the back of the bottle each time, and not just the hose. I counted the number of pumps prior to the launch: most groups were getting about 20 to 25, while we were getting 54 to 56, and one of over 60. Hence, we were getting massively more pressure than others. The pressure we got was sufficiently high that the end of the bike pump got very hot, and sufficiently hotthat it burnt my finger (quite a big blister).
The other trick was to use just thr right amount of water in the bottle, and we measured this out quite carefully where others did not. Hence, our results were reasonably repeatable.
As I noted earlier, we had quite a few groups come to see how we were doing it, but none of them noticed that the valve was in backwards.
Where most groups struggled to even go the 70M to the target, we had the rocket going so hard that we had to use a very low launch angle indeed.
One of the more challenging aspects was that each time we launched we had the valve blow out of the bottle and we them had to find it on the ground somewhere. The normal usage is that it stays in the bottle. Somehow, the other groups did not seem to catch on from that that we were doing something different. Launch was quite explosive, and the first time we did it both Alison and I stood in the wrong place and got sprayed liberally with mud.

The team did not especially like my nice blue hat (and there was a plot going to pinch it).
I did actually use an Archery Australia hat for one day, but got sun burnt. Hence, went back to the blue one.
If you think the picture with the blue hat is bad, you should have seen me wearing Tim's lucky maroon bathrobe during the team event.

Regarding the large tv set:
I was told that it is the largest in the UK. When the organisers went to insure it they found that its value is 630,000 pounds. It was provided free for the event by the "London 2012" committee. It was mostly used for the matchplay events. Probably would be suitable for Flame's home theatre?

Grant,
I think that Dave's stabiliser is a BlackMax. By memory he is using about eight weights on it plus side rods. The bow is very heavy indeed. Custom paint job on each stabiliser. No doubt when Dave wins in Athens everyone will want a set.
Yes, would be interesting to attend the World Target next year.

Gear being used at the championships.
While I did not do a count of bows, etc, my impressions included:
Recurve:
- A lot of PSE X-factor risers (and from many countries). A mixture of W&W limbs and PSE limbs (which are actually W&W limbs anyway).
- The majority of Hoyt recurves were not the tec risers.
- Quite a few Win & Win bows.
- The Indian team mostly had old Pro Medalist risers. They were quite battered and looked well used, but they were used to great effect.
- No one make seemed to dominate, but my guess is that there were probably more W&W than others.
Compound:
- Again quite a diversity, but probably Hoyt would have been the highest number.
- Quite a few PSE's, Martin's.
- Most Hoyts were Cam&1/2 (cannot remember seeing a Spiral Cam).
- A few BowTecs (single cams, not dual cams)
- A couple of Archery Research bows (actually looked quite good). The ones I saw were AR37's.
Arrows:
- Primarily X10's, Triples, Navigators.
- A smaller number of ACE's.
Release devices:
- Mr Carter would have been very pleased.
- Braden was using a Copper John.
Shops:
- There were a number of shops on site, but they were all very small ones that I had not heard of.
- The range of gear available was quite good, but nothing especially new or revolutionary.

Which shops were there? I know Bowsports is just down the road from Lilleshall (well, by Australian standards anyway).
How did the PSE X-factor's fair in competition? I have only seen one of these being shot (and not very well at that...).
James Park
30-07-2004, 07:52 PM
Bow Sports was certainly in attendance. Cannot remember the other names. Most of them set up at the competition venue. There was one the whole week at the practice venue.
The X-factors seemed to be working well. There were certainly more of them than I expected. I did notice though that with the recurve bows there was quite significant mixing of a riser of one make and limbs of a different make.
