I am still new to archery and I have never tuned my own bow. I have although read, at length, on it.
Should I trust my local bow shop

Always do as much yourself. This way you know exactly what went into it and if it's wrong you know that you did it. A Pro Shop will NEVER be able to tune a bow as well as the owner can because each bow is suited to that archer. Hand pressure and release pay a huge part in how a bow is tuned.

while what marcus says is true, i would spend a lot of time practicing before you try to tune too much. If the arrows are flying way off, then make some basic adjustments, but you can't properly tune until YOU perform each shot the same every time. So you should spend more time getting a good repeatable technique down, and building up good strength, untill you know exactly what weight you want to be at etc., and then it will not only be easier to tune, but it will also make more of a difference.
