Yes, strange though it may sound, York held the WAC way back in 1971. I wasn't aware of this until I saw the updated FITA site that has all (or most by any means) of the WAC results since 1931.
Just over the road in Knavesmire, Graeme Telford, Bernie Adams and Hans Wright of Australia shot their way to 11th, 38th and 40th. There were only 2 divisions: men and women. (No doubt you'd approve of that one, Marcus) ;). The highest 90m score was a 284, 70m a 317, 50m a 316 and 30m a 343. 1226 was the best FITA score shot.

But what was the weather like?

Graeme Telford was one of Australia's best-ever recurvers. In one of the other WAC's he finished 3rd. I was fortunate in having him provide some of my early coaching back in the mid 1960's, and I made the arrows he used when he got the 3rd.

The placename 'Knavesmire' should have some interesting history behind it, Grant?

"Knavesmire, the site of York's Racecourse is may have been the marshy land or area where knaves or felons were executed. Most of the racecourse grandstand dates from 1964 but part of John Carr's Grandstand of 1754 remains."
"In 1739, the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin was hanged on the Knavesmire."
Can't find a lot of info about it on line but I'm sure there would be more if I asked the people in my house (living with 30 historians/archeologists). Will let you know if I find anything else out.
