mine is 27 inches , and i know this kills speed.
what can you do to pick up some speed?

Mine is 28" and also inhibits speed. However I get 297fps from my 3D setup which I also use in target so it's pretty quick.
To get that speed I have
Moved to a high energy cam, the Spiral Cam. Other choice would be the Bowtech Dually.
Kept my brace height on the lower side, in this case about 8" (which is above spec, could go to 7 3/4" )
Keep my arrow weight down in 3D, 295 grains
Keep my poundage high at 58lbs.
When you take a short draw, with a heavy arrow and low poundage you simply won't get the speed.

Mine is 28 1/2, I get around 310 fps with my Bowtech Patriot VFT dually.
With each inch of draw length under 30" you will lose about 10 FPS off the IBO speed.
As Marcus said, you can optimise your speed by using a high energy cam, such as the Hoyt Spiral, Bowtech Dually or Bowtech Infinity.
You should shoot a light arrow weight if you want to maximise speed - keep it close to 5gn per pound - but remember that light arrows will drift in the wind over long distances. In consideration of that, higher poundage will help. I shoot around 60lb with a 300gn arrow, but wind drift is not the problem on the 3D range that it is at 90m on a FITA range. On the FITA range I shoot a heavier and thinner (360gn) arrow to minimise wind drift. With my heavier target arrows I get 284FPS from the Bowtech Patriot VFT Dually.
Lower brace height will also give you speed, but at the cost of "forgiveness".
My Patriot has a brace height of 7 5/8" which is great, and about my ideal brace height. I don't like to go under about 7" at the extreme.

Recurve draw is 30 3/8" arrow length to click. Compound is 31" draw length cams. No idea about speed. Not really interested so long as I can hit the target at 100y or 90m.

A chronograph (or radar) is usually used to measure an arrow's speed. A chronograph is a device that you shoot an arrow across - which then calculates velocity.
My 'true' draw is 29.25", which makes my AMO draw something like 31". However, my compound has the 30" modules and it feels just right.
I've chrono'ed my bow at 307 fps with a 312 grain arrow at 60#. After replacing the factory string, the bow is somewhat faster, but I've yet to chrono it.

I am using a PSE Primos STL with a 29" draw length module, and the cable twisted up to give me about another 1/4" of draw.
I have found that it is very important to get the draw length correct - a small change in draw length can have a large effect on how well you shoot.
