Can you smoke cigarettes to get nicotine during competition at the Olympics? Or any other competition in fact.
What about coffee or tea.. can you top up on caffeine as you go?
Anyone know?
Mick.

So far as I know, caffiene and nicotine are legal in the Olympics. They don't ban them at WR status events and I can't see how these would be any different. It's still a FITA regulated event.

Thanks Grant.. that's interesting.. I'm assuming a bit of the old "grog" is ok too..
Any proscriptions on delivery methods that you know of? IE.. what about nicotine patches?.. Or nasal spray or ventolin style device for an instant whack when needed? Can you have a row of mini shotglasses lined up in row if you need it?
Has any work been done that you know of on the use of non banned drugs that are beneficial to archery at a high competition level?
This could cure the problems with getting sponsors for Archery too..
The Australian Archery Team.. powered by Bundaberg Rum!

I'm not sure about FITA rules but I know for a fact that GNAS (Grand National Archery Society) here in the UK disallow the drinking of alcoholic beverages during competitions and you are not allowed to shoot with a blood alcohol level above 0.05%, which is the same limit as driving a car.
As far as other banned substances go, I'm not really sure. I know beta-blockers are a definite no-no since they lower your heart rate and help you relax. I'd assume other performance-enhancing steroids would be banned as well, like they are from almost all sports. There are some steroids that are allowed - some nasal sprays and the like. I had to look into one I started using to make sure it wasn't on the banned list and thankfully it wasn't.
There is a limit on caffeine. An Australian decathlete got done for it prior to his fencing event.

I seem to recall a .05 limit on Alcohol for the Olympics for Archery.
Getting maggoted and shooting world records is now frowned upon :D....although an excellent training technique from years gone. :D

On this subject you should be clear and precise. Start with page 93 book one of the FITA rules (http://www.archery-fita.org/rule_book/rule2004/rule2004.html. Then go to your national anti-drugs in sport institution (ASDA in Australia: http://www.asda.org.au/athletes/default.htm), and educate yourself.
Wishy washy hearsay on this topic is less than helpful.
http://www.asda.org.au/athletes/banned.htm
Reminds us that alcohol is on the 2004 prohibited list.
However some sport specific cases allow alcohol level. eg Archery (FITA) allows 0.1g/L blood alcohol (0.01 percent). Boules (CMSB) allows 0.5g/L (0.05 percent), Skiing (FIS) allows none at all, Gymnastics (FIG) 0.1g/L (0.01 percent), and Wrestling (FILA) none
Nicotine is not banned (wonder why?)
and a quick check on ASDA lists:
NicabateCQ
NicabateCQ Clear
NicabateCQ Lozenges
Nicorette Chewing Gum
Nicorette Inhaler
Nicorette Patch
Nicotinell
Nicotinell Chewing Gum
Nicotinic Acid
As OK on the ASDA site.
Also, you have to keep up to date. Caffeine and pseudoephedrine , previously prohibited in-competition under the IOC 2003 List, are permitted under the 2004 List.

Post script: While nicotine is not banned, there is a FITA rule about smoking itself during the comp:
FITA 2004: 7.8.4.1 No smoking is allowed in and/or in front of the athletes area.

I was wondering when this ruling came into play. Whether it was something only Southern Judges enforced because none of them smoke a pipe or what...? :D The last FITA star we went to, they said nobody was allowed to smoke in front of the tent-line. The judges in the north never mention it because one of the national judges smokes a pipe all day long. :-?

But as all team members at OG's must be dressed the same, down to length of socks, colour of belt etc, if one person were allowed to smoke, then all would be required to smoke, potentially!

And the next match is a quarter-final between the Marlboro Man and Joe Camel. Gonna be close, folks, but I suspect that the lower tar and better taste of the good, wholesome Marlboro is going to give their man the edge...
