View Full Version : Southern University Games
Our local council have announced that Latrobe City will host the Australian University Sport Southern University Games for the next six years. I gather this covers Universities in SA, Vic, & Tas. Does anyone know if Archery is included? If it is, there may be some way that our club could get involved.

If you can demonstrate to AUS (Australian University Sport - the governing body) that enough people from a few Uni's will turn up they will jump on it. Their mandate is to promote sport within University. The more diversity and the more numbers the better. At Sydney Uni we have found that AUS can't do enough to help you get these things off the ground if you can get a reasonable number of competitors (say at least 20 from at least 3 Uni's). Further, you already have facilities, so looking for a venue is not an issue. They would love it, go for it!! :D
I know that on this forum alone you have three competitors from three Uni's (Mike, Pete, and Erika), and there must be a couple more. You may well lack numbers, but if you work long-term and set up a Uni programme to get students from your local Uni doing archery it will happen.
Keep us posted. (I would come and shoot it too 8) )
Here's the AUS website, get in contact with them and tell them what you want to do:

I only have a few weeks at uni left. Guess that means I won't qualify if anything is organised :(

Pete, for AUS, I believe that a student still qualifies for the games 6 months from date of graduation.
I don't recall where I read/heard that.

And depending on how you chose to run your event, you can also have invites from non AUS South universities attend as guests.
The advantage of this (and one of the reasons why we are hoping to do this next year at AUS East Archery) is that demonstrates that there are archers from the different AUS sports zones, and our case for a AUS National Champs in Archery is justified.
If you do host a AUS South Archery event and you invite Sydney Uni, our entire team could come down as a special event (club subsidised travel and all depending on our funds) and we could all have a great time shooting together.
If you need any help in regards to rules and formats etc, contact me or Alex, and we'll be able to help you through it as we have hosted one ourselves and are hoping to host again :D
