Thought I would ask a nice simple question, what are people using in the way of "heads" on their hunting arrows when shooting Rabbits or Hares ? and why do you use that type of "head" ?

I just use 2117's with 125gn field points screw in with those small "adder" small game heads that sit behind the field point when you screw it in.

I've shot many rabbit with these, and I'm yet to have a rabbit get up again. They are very effective in providing a quick efficient harvest.

I think using just field points is a bit irresponsible, and using broadheads is a waste of time. For me, the adders are great.

On anything bigger though, from cat size upwards, razor sharp broadheads are a must.

Got to agree with Eberbachl. I only will take about two rabbits before I quit for the day. Seems a waste to throw high dollar arrows at such small game. My buddy shoots carbons and his arrows always seem to survive, but my matrix or all alluminum ones do not fare so well after the pass through.

right on dtl2441,

...I knew a guy who threw away every arrow after a pass through

The arrow could be absolutely fine...he said he couldnt stand the smell!

hahahaha :bday:  :bday:

I was just spewing he shot a different length/spine to me :)

I use those three bladed Bodkins and grind the pointback half an inch.

Makes a very effective blunt and cheap too, that stops them dead. Likewise I've never had a Rabbit take off after a solid hit with these.

Lost count of the number of arrows I lost, where the rabbit took off and down his warren

I agree with Luke, but it depends on the size, small (squirrls) use blunts, mid (ground hog) use adder with field points, or if you want to burn cash fast, use broadheads, fixed or mechanicals, anything bigger brodheads are a must. I made cheap blunts by epoxying a 100grain target points into a 38 spl spent casings.

chopped bodkin works for me.

Have to have a look at the bodkin and see how much is "chopped" . I have even heard that using these chopped bodkins that the arrows sort of stand up for you rather than bury in the grass, is this correct ?

Never thought about it like that Steve, but now that you mention it I recall having one particular arrow with this head that seemed unlosable, I shot a squillion bunnies with it and missed just as many but that arrow just kept coming home. BTW I would only use a sharp broadhead on hares as opposed to rabbits as they are a fair bit bigger and stronger, they dont have burrows to scarper down either so the odds of recovering them from a well placed shot are very high.
