I don't believe that any state has applied for 2004. Must be Queensland's turn by now.
Pity you're missing Perth, Maranoa, they usually put on a great show. Quite a few overseas teams usually attend Perth Nats too.

I am staggered by all the comments about Perth being expensive. Perth Juniors have to budget for about $1500 every year but they get down and raise it and so have a good sized teams. The don't have sponsors, they have the old fashioned things like cake raffles, and their parents cater lunches at the State Championships. Stories about State Govt sponsorship have been greatly exaggerated over the years. They get one third of the lowest possible airfare (now Virgin) and do not get it until about six months after they get home.
Full Nationals details are at www.archerywa.com.au, and results will be there too.
All this, and I'm not even on gthe committee!!!

It's very true that the West Aussies always send a full junior team to all of the nationals, no matter whereever they are, and are forking out a lot of money EVERY year. Its only fair that the one time in every six or so years that everybody in the east goes to perth, as they are only paying as much as the west aussies pay every year. Also Perth always puts on a good nationals, as everybody at every other nationals that have been held in perth would know. Just ask somebody who went to the Senior nats in 2001.

I don't think anyone is really getting upset that they are in Perth, most of those who get funny about it are not serious target shooters anyway. Also those living Perth expect to pay $600 on airfares to go to the Nats, while for those over here Perth costs 3-4 times the amount for most. Certainly not a "lets never have them in Perth again" attitude.
I never shot Perth (they didn't host one when I was a Jr) but it has a good reputation

I am surprised that you are spreading such false travel information via the Forum.
Still available today, the fare from Melbourne to Perth and return is $500.23 travelling day or night. The price from Perth to Melbourne and return is $517.94. The only reason that it is more expensive to fly from Perth is the landing tax in Melbourne.
I believe that the forum is too valuable to be spreading these urban myths.

Sorry I worded it badly. I did not mean that for us to fly to Perth costs us $2000 while to fly from Perth costs you $600. I meant that to go to the Nats on the Easten side of the country can be done for under $200 for people over here (minus accomodation etc) while it will always cost much more than that to go to and from Perth due to distance.
I don't have a problem with the Nats being in Perth, glad they are willing to run it, unlike Victoria.

but why should people living in perth expected to pay $600 to go to nationals every year, but when the nationals are in perth once every six years that people in the eastern states think that they're not expected to pay $600 once off to come to perth.
Certainly not a "lets never have them in Perth again" attitude.
Even if it isnt that attitude if nobody fly's over and turns up then there isnt a nationals. There were over 80 archers from the east at the Junior Nats in Adelaide 2002, but i believe only 60 from the eastern states coming to Perth. Thats a drop of over 25% of juniors

Perhaps it's up to the Easten state societies to do something about it, like organise sposorship by airlines to help subsidize the trip.
Personally if they held a Nats in Perth when I was a junior, I would have gone. However I can also understand why many wouldn't either. It's a shame, and abusing those families not prepared to pay it is the wrong thing to do. Instead asking AA or the States to do something about it cetainly is. Perhap even WA needs to try and arrange bulk airline discounts or something. Fact is that it's a 3-4 day drive to Perth from Melbourne, and only 6 hours to Adelaide, 6 to Canberra, 9 to Sydney etc etc. Can't blame the archers for that.
Instead of complaining that no one is coming lets try and work out a solution to getting more over there.
8) :D
Just to put my 2 cents in, I think it is a different story for the Junior nats as generally its the parents paying. Personally, I think this is a problem for the sport becuase it fosters the "dynasty effect" where certain families with money for archery can have their kids compete at every nats. This means that a lot of potential talent gets wasted.
I was never a junior archer, so its hard for me to say, but I don't think my folks could have afforded for me to go to the junior nats, and I am Victorian. I probably couldn't have even gone to a Sydney Nats.
As for seniors, different story, they are self funded, but, for example, I have not been to a nats yet for purely financial reasons....
Ideally there would be a central junior nats with central sponsorship for say the top 3 or 4 juniors from each state. I guess Adelaide would be best -- most central.

to everyone who missed out on the perth nationals in january you missed a great time. personal bests were shot, and friends were made or renewed, and to top it off our end of nationals wind up was great.
it is true that us west aussies pay out over $500 every year, and it isnt right that there should be a 25% drop in numbers when they are held in perth. just think that you are missing a great time because you refuse to pay that extra little amount...what would you all do if the west aussies refused to come to any nationals because of the price?? well that will never happen, but if we had the same attitude as you it might...and the 2004 nationals are in Sydney for what i know...so that will make you all happy as it isnt the other side of the country to you.
