How do you know which release aid works best for you without buying and selling something that you don't feel confident in using?

What's the difference between a back tension release and what's the other one called?

this is where being part of a club is beneficial gunzer. In my circle we have no probs tryin out each others gear to find what works best for us. Releas aids are a special case tho. You are not an archer unles you own at least 5 of the suckers and all of them are the new miracle tool. :o
the difference between a pure bt release and a thumb release is not as great as you might think. Most archers shoot their thumb triggers as a bt unit.
the bt is a pawl design that is triggered by rotating the release till the pawl slips the tooth whilst the thumb trigger has a sears mechanism that is activated by a trigger in the thumb position. Many top archers say it is of value to own at least one of each as they compliment each other in a trainig regime. suck it and see is the only way.

Olddog has some good points there Gunzer.

Having a few releases can be very beneficial to the archer (ask 2dogs he has about 30  ) as you can set some up for training/practice with a heavier trigger than your release that you use for Competition.

Whether you use a wrist strap style release or a hand held, make sure you learn to shoot it properly. Either by reading books, watching videos or asking other competent archers. This will be very helpful to you down the track.

Probably one of the simplest pieces of advice is "Don't try and pull the trigger into the release, pull the release into the trigger" - From Jim Despart on Straight Talk from the Pro's video.

Lots of manufacturers give descriptions on their releases. Take your hand/finger size into account. Lots of the top release producers will specify a product to be for small hands etc.

Thanks for the input guys....

Hhhhmmm... I thought I can make a hobby out of compound shooting... quite demanding it seems (equipment wise).

(ask 2dogs he has about 30  )

Are you sure?

That's not even one for each year he has been shooting. I would have thought at least double that figure, allowing for wastage/loss/sales along the way

I gave up trying to follow all these variations in release aids many years ago.

I encounted this problem too not long ago, mainly what you do first is to try a trigger (I used Carters) and use a curved handle and a straight handle. See which one feels best and which one shoots best. Once you know what you like your fee to search the market for the perfect release for you and its a good idea to buy a trigger and a back tension at the same time and with the same (or close to) type of handle either straight or curved.

Having a number of release aids is good , i have 4 , though it is a bit of a wank . Alot of people use it as a excuse and rebound from release aid to release aid . Back when i was a kid , i only ever had 1 release , thats all my folks could afford and my scores where always respectable .

I like BT releases, having tried stacks of different releases over the years, I've only ever really like three. Stan's CNC two finger, the Zenith X-Cel Plus, and the Carter Atension, in no particular order.

Tried a few different triggers, but so far, nothing that's grabbed me ;)

Try as many as you can, then once you find one you like, buy it. I reckon it's the only way - unless you've got the dough to buy anything you like the look of, then take a hit and sell it second hand if you don't like it.

I don't believe there is any such thing as the perfect release for everybody, they're a very personal item, and shot properly - most of the better releases are capable of allowing the archer to shoot very high scores ;)
