From what I hear, it should be safe - the organiser of the event is friends with the local police cheif, so during the competition, the range (which they essentially custom-made for the Oceania Champs) will be surrounded by policemen.

You are lucky that the spelling and grammar police are in semi retirement at the moment, Andrew. Below your usual standard. :o

Depends how you define safe...
Even if it is, that doesn't sound like an event I'd be terribly keen to attend. Of course, it's arguably not so far from the US team's 'special security' in Sydney...

You mean the Secret Service contingent ? Or the SAS troopers who followed them everywhere ? :o
I gotta tell you, your Customs people had a cow over my concealed M1911, but they got over it. :P

The former... the SAS are British, they'd never stoop to anything as crude as standing around the US archery team looking staunch ;-)

If you're talking about Australian customs, they're not 'mine' ;-)
Of course ours wouldn't like the M1911 either, but they've been so hopeless recently they probably wouldn't spot it

Yes, definately the beer! A nice wee pub called the Occidental.

These SAS troopers were Australian SAS. And they came in handy once, when the media tried to crush the poor North Korean girl. :o
Those fellows know how to knock back a pint or three too 8)
I found, a couple of years later, that they're decent pistol shots, at least for Aussies  Had a few of 'em in a training class I was in.
Seems a certain American beat them in the class shootoff at the end of the week though...

I can imagine - the police in the village were bad enough! Apparently they were busily knocking back the Grappa with the Italians ;-)

Yeah, I thought "Solomon Islands is subject to earthquakes, volcanic activity, tidal waves and cyclones" was bad enough, until I saw "A violation of local laws may result in a jail sentence, served in a local prison. Consular assistance cannot override local law, even where local laws may appear harsh or unjust" :o
