I was chatting to an archery chap today.

He asserted that you pretty much could not use a recurve bow for hunting at all. Is this true?

What kind of poundage is required to take down a kangaroo? bearing in mind that most kangaroos you take down are less than a meter tall.

(and yes, I am culling, I always cull the small ones [it has nothing to do with the fact that the small ones taste better])

Well, hunting Kangaroos is illegal - so of course we wouldn't condone that...

:bday:
...but on the subject of hunting with a recurve - yep, absolutely fine - lot's of people do it. When I was an ABA member and I used to get Archery action, there were always pictures of successful hunters with recurves in there - it's quite common.

I think the minimum draw weight benchmark for hunting would probably be around the 50+ lb mark. Maybe some more experienced recurve hunters can chime in on that point.

Recurve bows can definitely be used for taking game, and they are the preferred weapon by many well respected hunters.

Don`t like the sound of taking roos with a bow though :o . A land holder should hold tags for the number of roos to be culled and ideally they should he head-shot by a capable marksman using a high powered rifle.

Consider joining a club and talk to some experienced bowhunters.

Well, humans have been hunting with longbows for 10,000 years or so, so I suspect it's quite doable with a recurve now.

Tim Strickland's quite into his hunting, and the last time I saw him he had a wee Hoyt hunting recurve - I think they've gone into production now.

DO NOT SHOOT KANGAROOS ! iLLEGAL AS THEY ARE A PROTECTED SPECIES!

As for the recurve question ,, yes it is possible to hunt a large range of game with it . People have been doing it for years . 50# would be the minimum that I would use .
Went out today with my Bear Grizzly recurve hunting goats ,, but a shot didn't present itself , so I went home empty handed , but had a good time in the bush , and some much needed exercise as well !
Know your limitations ,, IE your accurate shooting distance and take your ethics with you .

Even with a culling permit kangaroos can not legally be taken with a bow, as the boys have said. We are just trying to point you in the right direction here, and save bad publicity for our past time.

However to the recurve question, Most of my close hunting friends hunt with a recurve of around 50-60 pounds and have shot deer, goats, big boar and buffalo with the right arrow, broadhead combination.

A recurve in the right hands is a tool for harvesting game.

The law in Texas is a traditonal bow - recurve or longbow, has to be at least 40#
My two hunting recurves are both 55# at my draw length
