So, with the introduction of a fitness requirement, time to revive this?

I've got no ambitions of making the team, but it's made me curious about what I can run. I'll be finding myself a pedometer (I think my iPod has one...) and going for a run.
I estimate that it will probably take me about 20 minutes if I alternate walking and running. I'm not very fit at the moment.

As the thread sugests there are more ways to get fit than just running,
But make sure you have good shoes if you are going to run, need to cushion the impact,

I aim to alternate running, cycling, and running on the elliptical. I've got cushy shoes, so all should be good.

Just jump onto google earth and measure a 2.4k distance that you can get to and complete safely.
Pedometers are good for steps, but not distance.

I vary my stride depending on the level of output I feel capable of maintaining, so you'll find that you unconsciously vary it if you're not aware of it.

I think you're right though. It's time to revisit going for a run.

Believe it or not, there are indications that man has evolved to not need impact cushioning shoes and that they cause the adoption of a running style which causes injury.

So be cautious. Here are some looks at both sides of the argument.

If you do get into running and have an iPhone, get the RunKeeper app.

Does the equivalent of a Garmin GPS watch, but without all the HR monitoring. When I finally started to use RunKeeper, I found all the circuits I'd measured with my cars odometer (4km - 10km) were about 10% shorter than I thought (meaning I was about 10% slower than I thought!)

I've met some people who swear by those things. You can get them quite cheaply online if you head to my favourite dangerous shop...
