Sick of the wind

So having shot down in mana (wellington) on several occasions I have decided that the winds down there cost me a lot more points then other archers around me. Now this is decent wind we're talking about.

I shoot an evo and I don't think that helps but Im after some advice to try and get my wind scores up.

So far I've found that fine tuning the drawlength has helped and that there is such thing as to much weight on the stabiliser.

Don't tell yourself you can't shoot in the wind, or you're setting yourself up for a lower score right off the bat.

and, right now, do not think of a black cat at all...

Reformulate in: DO tell yourself you can shoot well in the wind!

The most important thing in wind in my opinion is confidence in your shot. I have always worked by the adage that you lose more points from a bad shot than from improper windage adjustment.

The key tendancy is to keep drifting back to the gold and trying to put the arrow in the gold. I have to consciously tell myself in my head "I am aiming at the red" or whatever, and consciously make sure that the shot is trying to go there - otherwise any effort I make usually ends up in my body trying to send the arrow back to the gold.

Get your shot confidence right, then all you have to worry about is getting the experience of different winds. Make use of the flags!

I hate shooting in the wind with a passion. I can't remember the last time i shot target where it wasn't windy that also includes club days.

On the weekend I shot a PB at 90m 338 then a wind came up shot a 337@70 then the wind really picked up and i shot a 317@50m, by the time we shot 30m the wind had settled to a breeze and the rain had started and i finished with a 350.

For me if the wind isn't pushing the bow around to much its not the end of the world you just have to concentrate on were to aim and don't try and aim to tight in the middle, If the bow is being pushed around and you are on the clock then sometimes just hitting the target is all i can hope for.

Read the gusts - don't draw up when its calm, draw up just before it gets calm (or calmer at Mana) so that when you fire you will be as still as possible.

Don't just rely on flags look downrange in the direction the wind is coming from to see what the vegetation is doing as well - and listen to the wind.

Shoot stronger/faster. You can still use a back tension type device successfully in the wind (take a look at Mandy's scores - she was shooting BT and was 40 points ahead of people with triggers).

But I know how you feel

also use the back of your neck.

As the wind builds it will get colder on your neck, as the wind dies down it will get warmer.

And listen for the wind.

That said dont freak out when you hear the wind. Stay calm and believe in your shot process.

It's only wind.

The only fair thing in shooting, is the wind. It blows, EVERYWHERE and EVERYONE.

Cheers fellas (well maybe not Jim ). I'll give all that a go next time it's breezy.

Curse of Napier is that it might not be for sometime.

More like dig away the hills. I am in the process of finding an exposed place to shoot at ocassionally, as there's no point training in sheltered conditions when there's only one shoot a year at this ground.

Wind

My 2cw
Avoid releasing when there is a gust, wait for it to go.
The wind blows you more than the arrow, so ensure you have a solid stance with a low centre of gravity. When you stiffen your body the C of G moves up, relax and it moves down. Read the wind with all available to you, flags, grass trees etc and try to shoot in the same wind strength each time. Use the colour of the wind. If it blows the arrow in the red, aim in the red on the other side of the gold. When you adjust jour sights for wind, you are going to forget where you started.
If you wait at full draw in the wind, you are going to get tired by the end of the shoot. Time your shots in the stiller gaps.

failing that, get to know how much bubble to give when in different winds
